Tyres can get pretty complicated. Between testing tyre pressure, tyre tread, wheel alignment, proportional weight balancing, slow punctures… you get the idea – it can be a lot to wrap your head around! Fitting tyre maintenance around your busy schedule can also be tricky (and that’s without considering other parts like bulbs, windscreen wipers, etc).
That’s why we have compiled an easy-to-understand list of all the tyre services that we here offer at Halfords. From repairs, to maintenance to seasonal preparation, we’ve got it all. Puncture Repair
If you notice a tyre is constantly losing pressure or you feel vibrations or a loss of steering control, you may have a tyre puncture. From debris such as nails in the road, your tyre can quickly become dangerous to drive on. If you’re able, carry out a quick inspection and see if there is a visible rupture or spike.
A tyre repair is a possibility with our puncture repair service. However, whether the tyre can be repaired or must be replaced depends on the puncture severity and position of the hole. It is likely we’ll be able to repair if the puncture hole is in the centre 3 / 4 of the tyre. If the puncture is on the tyre sidewall, then our experts will be unable to fix it – this kind of damage is unpredictable and may lead to a future blowout.
We will fully examine both the interior and exterior of your wheel and tyre and then identify future tyre issues and prevent any further damage. If we are unable to repair your tyre, we will happily refund the cost of the repair (excluding run flat tyres).
Wheel alignment
We offer a choice between the 2-wheel or the 4-wheel alignment service, depending on your budget and needs. While we recommend the 4-wheel alignment (as this is what most vehicles require), the choice is entirely yours. Our garage experts will carefully check the direction and angle of your tyres so that your vehicle’s handling performance is the best it can be.
Misaligned wheels may reveal themselves through ‘clunking’ noises when turning corners, vibrations through the steering wheel, or uneven tyre wear. Your car may also pull to one side of the road or have a poor fuel economy.
Using advanced computerised technology, our experts will check your wheels and make the adjustments required. You will be provided with a report of your wheel alignment readings before and after the process – that way you can see AND feel the difference!
Wheel balancing
Imbalanced wheels on your vehicle can cause a vibrating or wobbling sensation through your steering wheel (or entire car) and an increased difficulty to steer. This issue can occur time and with reaching high mileage, but also via accidents like hitting potholes or kerbs. We recommend that you have your wheel balances assessed every 6,000 miles (definitely no more than 15,000) and after a flat or replacement tyre.
Our Halfords experts will ensure that the combined weight around your tyre and wheel are proportionately distributed. This is carried out through the placement of tiny weights to specific points around the axel. If the weight is unevenly distributed, then it can lead to the premature wearing down of your tyres. If your wheels remain imbalanced for a longer period of time, then it may lead to suspension issues and a poor fuel economy/braking distance.

TPMS Valve Service
If your vehicle has a TPMS (or tyre pressure monitoring system), we can help to extend its lifespan through our valve service. Through damage or degradation, your TPMS valve can corrode. This can cause air to escape slowly (or quickly = blowout!) and force your tyre to lose pressure over time.
Our service will ensure your TPMS valve has a tight seal and caters to your specific type. If you have a ‘clamp in’ valve we can replace your securing screw. For ‘snap in’ valve stems, we can replace your locking nut, locating washer, valve stem, valve core, and valve cap. You certainly get your money’s worth!
Free Tyre Check
At Halfords, we even offer a completely free of charge tyre check. Our customer’s reassurance and safety are our top priority which is why we offer this great service. You can receive top advice from our experts while they carefully check your tyre pressure, tread depth and overall tyre condition.
If you would rather check your tyre pressure at home, our range of pressure gauges and tyre inflators can help you out. You can also quickly check your tyre tread using the 20p test. If you can see the outer rim of your 20p coin even in the tyre tread, your tread is likely below the legal requirement of 1.6mm. If this is the case, you will need to get replacements organised straight away. We can offer appointments at your local garage or why not use our Halfords Mobile Expert service – they’ll come to your home or workplace at your convenience!
