How to stop condensation in your car
Condensation inside your car can be a frustrating and sometimes dangerous problem, especially in the colder months. Fogged-up windows reduce visibility, meaning delays to your drive and even risky travel. However, good ventilation, a dry cabin, clean windows, and even anti-fog treatments, mean that you can hit the road safely in no time condensation-free.
Fortunately, with a few simple steps, you can keep your car clear and safe all year round.
1. Keep your car ventilated
Proper airflow is key to reducing condensation:
- Crack open a window slightly while parked.
- Use the air recirculation function sparingly.
- Run your heating or air conditioning on a low setting to circulate warm, dry air.
If you notice an issue with your air conditioning, you can always book in for our free air con check.
2. Clean your windows inside and out
Dirt, grease, and dust provide surfaces for condensation to cling to. Regularly clean your windows with the Halfords Glass Cleaner to remove grime and make it harder for moisture to stick.
3. Use an anti-fog treatment
Products like Rain-X Anti-Fog treatment or Anti-Fog wipes create a protective layer on the glass, reducing moisture build-up. Apply these treatments to the inside of your windows to keep them clearer for longer.
4. Keep your car dry
Wet clothing, shoes, and umbrellas add moisture that leads to condensation and even mould.
- Ensure you remove wet items as soon as possible.
- Remove any excess water and slush from your car mats or upholstery.
- Place a dehumidifier in the car to absorb moisture in the air. Helping prevent condensation build up.

A great option is the Simply Reusable Car Dehumidifier as it offers unlimited use. The compact and easy-to-transport design makes it a handy addition to your car, caravan or motorhome. With environmentally friendly silica gel, this absorbent, one-time purchase is capable of holding 40% of its weight in moisture to fight against condensation and mildew.
5. Check your seals and drainage
Condensation can get into your vehicle and actually be much worse if:
- Your car’s door and window seals aren’t fully intact.
- Your drains in doors and the boot are blocked – water won’t escape and instead sit inside your car.
