When the clocks go back this autumn, it might signal colder, darker days, but it also means you’ll gain an extra hour of daylight in the morning.
Whether you use the extra light to get ahead of jobs around the house, spend extra time with family, or take up a hobby, here are four ways to use your extra hour productively while staying safe, active and ready for the season ahead.
Prepare your car ahead of winter
With colder weather approaching, now is the perfect time to prepare your car for winter driving. A little maintenance now can help prevent inconvenient breakdowns and keep you safer on the road during the months ahead.
Check key areas such as:
- Engine oil levels – keeping your levels topped up reduces wear on key engine components, avoiding breakdowns and costly repairs.
- Tyre condition and tread depth – good quality tyres help with handling, braking and performance, ensuring your safety on the road.
- Battery health – cold weather puts extra strain on your battery, making it one of the most common causes of winter breakdowns.
- Windscreen wipers – clear visibility is key in winter, and with worsening weather, having wipers that clear your windscreen properly are essential.
- Vehicle lights – quality lights help you stay visible and confident when driving during darker evenings.
If you’re short on time, visit your local Halfords for a Free 5-Point Winter Car Check. Our experts can inspect your battery, wiper blades and windscreen condition, as well as help you find the correct bulbs for your vehicle and fit them for a small fee.
For even greater peace of mind, Halfords Motoring Club members can book a 10-Point Car Check as part of their membership benefits.
Take an early morning bike ride
If you’re an avid cyclist, the extra hour in the morning offers the perfect excuse to head out for an early ride before work. Alternatively, turn your daily commute into something you look forward to with our range of commuter bikes, helping you get active, save on travel costs and make more of every journey.
As the weather cools, make sure you’re ready for changing conditions with winter cycling clothing, bike lights, racks and reflective accessories to help keep you comfortable, visible and prepared for every ride, whatever the weather.

Spend time with family and friends
Looking for a simple way to spend quality time together? Use your extra hour to get outside and make the most of the daylight. Whether it’s a family bike ride, a trip to the park or helping little ones build confidence on their bikes and scooters, it’s a great way to keep everyone active while creating lasting memories.
As the evenings get darker, don’t forget reflective clothing and accessories to help keep the whole family visible and comfortable.
Get organised and ready for your next project
A tidy garage or workshop can make every DIY job quicker, easier and more enjoyable.
If summer projects have left your space a little cluttered, use your extra hour in the morning to tidy, and get everything back in order. Sort your tools, clear out unwanted items and invest in practical storage solutions so everything is exactly where you need it when your next project comes along.
From durable tool cabinets to workshop essentials, you can shop a range of storage solutions perfect to help organise a variety of different sized spaces.
