What are all-season tyres?
All-season tyres are designed to provide reliable performance in a range of weather conditions, combining features of summer and winter tyres. They can be used throughout the year and are designed to provide grip on dry, wet and cold roads, as well as in light snow.
A temperature of around 7°C is often used as a general guide when comparing summer and winter tyre performance. Below this temperature, conventional summer tyre compounds can harden and provide less grip, while winter tyre compounds are designed to remain more flexible.
There’s no requirement to switch between summer and winter tyres in the UK, and all-season tyres are designed to provide balanced performance across a wider range of temperatures and conditions.
Aside from temperature changes, all-season tyres are also designed to deal with heavy rainfall, snow and ice on the road surfaces. Sipes and grooves within the tread allow the tyre to evacuate surface water during heavy rainfall, while also providing grip and traction.
Are all-season tyres worth it?
All-season tyres can be a great choice for drivers who want one convenient set of tyres to use year-round. They’re designed for reliability across a variety of road conditions, including dry, wet and colder roads, and can also provide better traction in light snow. They can also be more convenient than using separate summer and winter tyres, as you don’t need to change between sets as the seasons change.
Who are all-season tyres best for?
For many UK drivers, all-season tyres are a versatile and convenient option for year-round driving and ideal for drivers who:
- Typically drive in areas with relatively mild winters.
- Want to use one set of tyres throughout the year.
- Drive in a mixture of dry, wet and cold conditions.
- Want to avoid switching between summer and winter tyres.
- Rarely encounter snow or icy conditions.
However, all-season tyres can also be a compromise under certain conditions. Dedicated summer tyres can offer better performance in warm conditions, while winter tyres are designed specifically for colder conditions and severe winter weather. If you regularly drive in extreme temperatures, heavy snow or challenging conditions, a dedicated seasonal tyre may be more suitable.
What are my options when it comes to all-season tyres?
There are a variety of all-season tyres available and one of our favourites is the premium quality Goodyear Vector 4 Seasons Gen-3, which has been designed to cope well in summer, winter and mixed weather conditions.
With rainy days and unpredictable weather considered normal in the UK, the Goodyear Vector 4Seasons Gen-3 is a tyre that offers useful, advanced features, such as:
- Aqua Control Technology: Deeper, wider tyre grooves to promote water dispersion and better aquaplaning resistance.
- Dry Handling Technology: Sturdy crown and shoulder blocks reduce tyre deformation from aggressive turns, braking and accelerating.
- Snow Grip Technology: The large number of sipes at the centre of the tread stimulate openings for enhanced grip in snow.
The Goodyear Vector 4Seasons Gen-3 has also performed strongly in independent tyre tests. In the 2025 ADAC all-season tyre test, it was rated ‘Good’, achieving first place out of 16 tyres tested.
Are all-season tyres suitable for snow?
For drivers looking for an all-season tyre that’s been certified for use in severe snow conditions, they should look for the 3-Peak Mountain Snowflake (3PMSF) marking. This indicates that the tyre has met specific performance requirements for snow conditions.
The 3PMSF symbol is different from the M+S (Mud and Snow) marking, which does not require the same standardised snow performance test.
